Cafe Toro, located at the Locker Student Union (LSU) is a place for everyone to eat or work. The cafe, which was previously only accessible for staff and faculty, is now open for students. The cafe is the dining area located at the north lawn entrance of the LSU. Cafe Toro provides a variety of food during the week, offering breakfast, lunch, salads, and soups, with a new, updated menu every week on their website.
If you are a morning person, waffles can never go wrong at the start of your day. Cafe Toro is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and breakfast is served from opening to 11 a.m. After that, chefs prepare and cook lunch which is served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m
Denzyl Collins, a cashier at Cafe Toro, said the chefs are in charge of how the specials are cooked and the ones that come up with the food ideas on a weekly basis. “My favorite meal from here is the soup and chili. I have tried other food but chili is the best one so far,” Collins said.
One of the breakfast options are Huevos Rancheros, a classic Mexican dish that consists of corn tortillas, fried eggs topped with red or green warm salsa, and queso fresco. As you take the first bite, it has a crunchy burnt taste and as you eat your Huevos Ranchero, you get excited to get to the center to reach the salsa which makes this Mexican dish delicious. You also get the choice of how you want your eggs. Huevos Rancheros with a pineapple drink is a good way to start your day before class. Breakfast options start at $8.50 but can range higher depending on what you get.
Are you vegan? No problem!
Cafe Toro also provides a vegan menu every week. Most of the vegan protein is made of plant based soy which is a popular type of legume that is originated from Asia. It contains fiber, vitamins, and minerals. It is known to be called the “complete protein” because it contains all essential amino acids.
“Surprisingly we get people to buy from the vegan menu rather than the specials that the chefs cook,” said Collins.
There are a variety of dishes every day. If you are a foodie looking for something new, Cafe Toro is the spot to come eat with friends or alone. Eating your food and having a view of the North Lawn brings a better taste to your food. While I ate my delicious Huevos Rancheros, I had a great view of the sky. I felt like I was in a rooftop restaurant.
Jalapeño Tri-Tip is a dish served during lunch time containing Arborio Rice, steak, and vegetables. The steak gives a juicy flavor to the Aroborio rice and vegetables. A great combination of a dish. The Jalapeño Tri-Tip can never go wrong when needing carbs after a good workout.
If you don’t eat beef, chicken, nor vegan food there are also a variety of salads. They offer Pasta Primavera Salad, Chicken Caesar Salad, and Tropical Fruit Salads. If salads aren’t your thing, soup and chili are also an option. For the soups, they offer chicken and Wild Rice Soup and Chili con Carne. Chicken soup can never go wrong under cold weather.
If you are on campus, feel free to stop by Cafe Toro, it is a spacious and friendly environment, where Toros can dine, find a new favorite dish and socialize!
