The CSUDH volleyball team recently mourned the loss of one of their former players, Delea Pursel, who played for the university in 2011-12. Pursel passed away three weeks ago.
A moment of silence was held last Tuesday, Oct. 1 before the Toros home match versus UC San Diego. Both teams, along with everyone in attendance, were asked to stand in silence in honor of Pursel.
Volleyball head coach Jennifer Adeva said she had a special connection with Pursel.
“We’re all heartbroken by this news,” Adeva told Toros Athletics. “She was part of my first team when I arrived and was a special kid…she touched the lives of so many people in our program, from her teammates, other student-athletes and us as coaches. She will be missed tremendously.”
Pursel was a starter for the Toros in 51 of her 54 career matches. In 2011, she led the team in block solos, block assists, and total blocks.
A memorial service was held at the Clairemont Lutheran Church in San Diego Sunday, Sept. 29 and was followed by a celebration of life at Fellowship Hall later that day.
