Some college students dream of having the chance to study abroad, but they may not necessarily know the steps to turn those dreams into reality. Fortunately, there are resources available on campus to help Toros take their academic careers beyond Dominguez Hills.
On September 12, 2023, the CSUDH Study Abroad Office invited Toros to expand their horizons during its annual study abroad fair. The fair not only introduced students to the office, but also provided opportunities to chat with advisors and other Toros who have participated in the program.
Students interested in studying abroad can meet with advisors one-on-one to learn more about application deadlines and the programs available during Spring semester. Toros looking to participate this Spring must submit their application materials by October 1, 2023.
Advisors recommend starting the process as soon as possible to avoid any potential issues. The Study Abroad Office also recommends students meet with their academic advisors to ensure that courses taken while abroad count toward their degree.
“[Students] need to identify the classes they are interested in and check with academic advisors for equivalency,” said Rachael Wangui, the Study Abroad Advisor.
Financial concerns may be another issue for some students to address before applying to the program. However, Wangui said there are “a lot of opportunities for scholarships.”
“We send students emails with upcoming deadlines for scholarships that they can apply for. There are different categories for scholarships, such as general scholarships, and university scholarships that students can apply within their department,” said Wangui.
Resources are available at CSUDH to help students have the opportunity to study abroad. Students only need to get in contact with the study abroad office or a study abroad advisor in order to find more details about this topic. Financial aid can also help cover some of the expenses. There are study abroad programs where students can use their financial aid to pay tuition and other expenses.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this story included incorrect information regarding application materials and fees. The Study Abroad Office does not charge application fees, nor requires students to submit bank statements.
The materials and fees listed previously were for international students interested to study at CSUDH as part of the Study Abroad America program. The Bulletin regrets the error.
