Sigi Schmid announced today that he has stepped down from his charge as LA Galaxy head coach, effective immediately.
“His announcement comes too late in the season and that effects the team drastically,” said nine-year season pass member Marie Sokolik. “He should have left a long time ago.”
Schmid will take a break from coaching after a long 35 Years of coaching, 19 of which were at the professional level (1999). Schmid leaves as the winningest coach of MLS history with 266 wins in regular and post-season.
“Sigi Schmid has been an extremely important piece in the history of the LA Galaxy,” said LA Galaxy service executive Zack Krukowski. “It is always sad when someone’s time with the club comes to an end.”
Under the hands of Schmid this season, the Galaxy holds a record of 10-10-8, currently standing in 8th place in the western conference.
With six games left in the regular season, Dominic Kinnear has been named LA Galaxy interim head coach for the remainder of the 2018 season. In his career, Kinnear has claimed the MLS Cup twice and records 166 victories, the third most wins in league history, only under Schmid and Bruce Arena.
“Dominic Kinnear is one of the most decorated coaches in the MLS history and should be a great fit to seamlessly take over management of the roster for the remainder of the 2018 season,” Krukowski said.
Kinnear’s first test will be Saturday, Sept. 15 against current MLS champions Toronto FC, at BMO Field.
