Cal State Dominguez Hills recently signed an agreement with the Université des Montagnes, a private university in Cameroon.
The memorandum of understanding is an “agreement to cooperate” between the two schools, with Dominguez Hills providing resources, such as syllabi and course materials, for the African college.
The signing took place at CSUDH and was facilitated by Professor Jim Katzenstein, a faculty member in the Department of Management and Marketing.
While on a trip to Cameroon in 2009, Katzenstein met the president of Université des Montagnes, Lazare Kaptue, and suggested the partnership.
“The agreement has a positive effect on both campuses,” Katzenstein said.
CSUDH hopes to benefit, he added, by using the relationship to foster the international component of international management courses at Dominguez Hills.
Dominguez Hills also plans on sending a faculty member from the College of Health Sciences in December or January to teach courses on anatomy and hematology at the Université des Montagnes.
There are also plans to work with the faculty in Cameroon to help develop courses, as well as bring students from Cameroon to Carson for independent study.
Katzenstein said works are in the process to bring Cameroonian students to Dominguez Hills using Blackboard.
Dominguez Hills also has plans to use the College of Health Sciences to collaborate with the medical school at Université des Montagnes.
Katzenstein takes students with him on his trips to different African countries and encourages everyone, not just the students in his classes, to travel there.
“This experience changes your life,” he said. “Seeing how other people live and their struggles, it’s life-changing.”
