Students will be given the option of changing certain letter to no credit as late as June 1, CSUDH President Thomas A. Parham announced Wednesday in a campus-wise email.
“CSUDH is modifying its grading policy to include an extended NC (no credit) option for the spring 2020 semester,” Parham explained in the memorandum.
This no credit option will allow students currently enrolled in spring 2020 courses to change their letter grades to NC after final grades have been posted. Students will have until June 1 to petition for this change, otherwise, the registrar will continue with the use of letter grades.
The NC option includes undergraduate students who earn a D+ or below, as well as graduate students who receive a C- or lower. President Parham also outlined how the school will suspend the 18-unit Withdrawal (W) limit, the use of Incomplete Course (IC), and Withdrawn Unauthorized (WU) grades. He stressed these modifications were made to protect students and their letter grades while also “providing a level of flexibility to remove a lower
grade that may affect a student’s GPA,” Parham said.
However, Parham said ” the same implications that currently exist with the NC option still apply, and students are strongly encouraged to meet with their academic advisors as soon as possible to discuss those
implications and decide on the best course of action.”
However, students who are currently on Academic Probation are excluded from these modifications, as their academic standing with the school is essentially on hold.
CSUDH’s Academic Senate and the CSU system have sent out surveys to ensure all possible avenues were considered in response to the unprecedented changes with the school and how to continue effective virtual instruction. The Bulletin previously reported that the CSUDH Academic Senate voted in favor of the grading system to be modified for students to transition their spring course letter grades to Credit or No Credit grades.
Students are urged to speak to their department and academic advisors before making any hasty decisions about their grades during these extraordinary circumstances.
Students and faculty with specific questions about the grading options are encouraged to visit the CSUDH University Advisement Center website at www.csudh.edu/uac/covid-19-spring-2020-grading to review the policy, find FAQ answers, access the grade petition form, and/or to contact an advisor who will be happy to help you navigate your options.
