September is National Suicide Awareness Month and Cal State Dominguez Hills sponsored informational events Sept. 11-15 to raise awareness about the mental health services available on campus.
CSUDH offers free counseling services to students suffering from mental health issues. Those with personal problems can visit the Student Health & Psychological Services office to schedule an appointment.
“It’s OK to feel pressure and sadness, but when it becomes a burden, we are here to help; our goal is to meet students’ primary health care needs,” said Josephine Lara, the health education assistant at Student Health and Psychological Services.
Though anyone can visit for counseling, the center is also there to help with acute problems, including suicide-prevention.
CSUDH hosted a suicide-prevention lawn campaign in front of the Loker Student Union’s North Lawn that provided statistics and information on how suicide affects students nationwide. Suicide Awareness Day was held Sept. 13 on the East Walkway.
At one related event, students watched a documentary, “Its Real: College Students and Mental Health Suicide.” The film tells the story of six students and their journeys to overcoming their mental illnesses.
The documentary also focuses on the sometimes difficult transition from high school to college. After the documentary played, there was a discussion about the stigma surrounding mental illness and why it prevents students from obtaining help.
CSUDH also hosted a candle-light vigil for students who wanted to honor a loved one lost to suicide. Students were given 3×5 cards to write messages for those who have died. They were also encouraged to support other students by making cards for them.
Suicide Prevention Month is continuing. The last event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 21 on the East Walkway.
Students who think they may be dealing with mental health issues or depression are encouraged to attend the events or visit the counseling center.
