Campus radio station KDHR had Toros thinking pink on Sept. 21, when it transformed the LSU Ballroom into a “Mojo Dojo Casa House” for the “Barbie & Friends Dance Party.” The party marked the first (and only) major event hosted by KDHR this semester – and Toros turned up in force.
Students lined up outside the Ballroom well before doors opened at 5 p.m., with some dressed as their favorite Barbie characters – specifically, Barbie and Ken. The first 75 students in line received a custom hot pink CSUDH tote bag emblazoned with the phrase, “This Barbie is a Toro.”
The Ballroom was adored with pink from top to bottom, with lights casting a rosy hue throughout the room. Bal- loons accented the tables, where students basked in Barbie’s effervescent glow as the clips from the “Barbie” movie were projected on screen. Eventually, a hot pink crowd of Barbies and Kens – and even Teddy the Toro – hit the dance floor. It was as though Barbie and Ken had come to life, as several students wore costumes honoring their favorite version of the iconic toys.
Partygoers cooled down with cans of Celsius energy drink, which they were handed as they entered the ballroom. Others waited in line to gorge on a buffet of candy, while some students popped into the life-sized Barbie toy box to take pictures and selfies.
Giveaways included KDHR merchandise, tote and goodie bags, and gift cards to Chick-fil-A.
KDHR DJ Raven Emmert, who spun music for the party, estimates that about 275 Toros attended the event. “I think the night went really well,” Emmert said. “I wasn’t expecting as many people to show up as they did, but I’m really happy that many people came.”
The Barbie & Friends Dance Party succeeded in making CSUDH Barbie Land for a night. KDHR will host another event in the spring.
