With the April 20 game against UC San Diego in the books, the men’s baseball team increased its win streak to five games.
It was quite the offensive day for the Toros, smashing 16 hits, which allowed a victory of 12-6 over the Tritons.
Although having the Tritons put up two runs in the first inning, the Toros matched the conference’s No. 1 team, tying it in the second.
Esteban Ortega was able to spark a five-run fifth inning with a homerun almost over the left-center field net.
Miguel Castaneda, Daryl Donerson and Shawn Sweeney followed the homer with singles to load the bases for shortstop Adrian Guzman.
The Tritons brought in reliever Kyle Lucke to put an end to the inning, but Guzman cashed in two runs with a double down the left field line.
Centerfielder Brandon Polizzi added another run in the fifth with a single to right field following Guzman.
Polizzi had four singles for the day, increasing his batting average to .395.
Pitching was also a key component for the team’s victory. Good pitching kept the momentum flowing for the Toros.
Starting pitcher Joe Bresson kept his composure and gave almost six innings of solid pitching for his team, on account he had a tight zone from the umpire.
Jacob Musial and Cy Scott relieved Bresson and finished the game strong without allowing another run to cross.
The series continues Friday at Toro Field and Saturday at UCSD.
