A mental health and wellness fair took place at Cal State Dominguez Hills April 5 where many students got to meet with health professionals for quick checkups and medical tests and learn about a range of free on-campus medical services.
The event included an on-site blood drive truck. Participants received free eye, HIV and glucose-level tests.
The offerings were aimed at students who lack health insurance, can’t visit a doctor or just don’t have the money for appointments or insurance copays.
Students also participated in games and contests and received freebies like pizza and bottled water.
The Student Health and Psychological Services and the Alcohol Awareness Coordinating teams attended, providing information and services.
In addition, there were 22 vendors, including FPA Women’s Health, Bee Well Now Clinic, Neuro Drinks, Planned Parenthood, American Heart Association, Enagic Kangen Water, Project Choice, UFC Gym, Walmart Neighborhood Market and others.
Every CSUDH student is required to pay a health fee of $75 in the beginning of each year, which helps fund campus health services. That helps make many medical services on campus free.
“We care about both physical and mental health of the students,” said JoAnn Aragon, a health educator at the student health services department. “We usually have several vendors from both the mental and the physical health spectrum, the gym, contraception clinics, dentists, chiropractors, etc.
“Today … we’re just allowing the students to stop by and get the information about where they can go around here to get services they need.”
