Toro Dreamer Success Center Opens Semester With Virtual Game Night, Blessing
Fun and camaraderie might have been the end goal of the Toro Dreamers Success Center first virtual game night Tuesday, but there was a touch of seriousness as well, both in reminding participants of the importance of inclusivity, as well as honoring a past that informs the present.
So, before the scavenger hunt and Tik Tok challenge, TDSC Coordinator Ana Miriam Barragan, who hosted the event via Zoom along with several members of the TDSC staff, spoke about using proper pronouns and asked all in attendance to edit their username to show which pronouns they go by.
Then, Yesly Lopez, a Fellow of TDSC, took a moment to pay respect and acknowledge the Tongva Nation.
“CSUDH is on land that was first populated by the Tongva people,” she said. “As a thank you, it is best to show gratitude for those of the Tongva tribe who consider themselves the caretakers of the land.”
Following the show of appreciation, Miriam kicked off the first game of scavenger hunt. Attendees were broken into five teams, each led by a TDSC staff member. A 20-item list was sent to each team, which included completing tasks such as, find something crunchy, make a tower only using household items and identify who Dr. Norma Quintero is, to name a few.
After about 20 minutes of competition it was Team Magnificent 6 that made it back into the main room with all tasks complete .It was there the winning team then competed against one another with the sole winner earning $50 cash. A second scavenger hunt took place and ten completed tasks later it was Esther, a student, who came out $50 richer.
This was followed by the TikTok challenge where students sent in their most creative Tik Toks and were voted on by other students via the poll in Zoom. Valeria Arredondo and Daniel Lopez were the two students who won the competition and each earned $50.
“We do wish to continue these nights moving forward,” Barragan said. “Community is very important especially during times like this, but we won’t allow COVID-19 to stop us from building relationships and showing love to one another.”
The evening ended with TDSC discussing the many programs they have to offer, in addition to encouraging all in attendance to learn more about the various groups that make a difference on campus as well.
