One Beam at a Time

By Matthew Alford

The past, present and future of CSUDH was embodied Thursday at a beam-signing ceremony, in which President Thomas A. Parham was joined by his cabinet and other school officials, civic leaders and emeritus faculty to celebrate the final beam that will be used in the construction of the Innovation and Instruction Building, scheduled to be completed by fall, 2021.

The four-story, 106,000-square-foot building, billed as the “University’s Front Door,” since it faces Victoria Street, will house an atrium, the university’s business college, classrooms ranging from 25 to 120 seats, active learning classrooms and a configuration that will allow some classrooms to be converted into a banquet hall which, joined with a 250-seat auditorium, can host conferences and other events.

Carson Councilmember Cedric Hicks (far left) flashes the Toro salute along with other distinguished university officials and guests who we didn’t get all the names of.

The city of Carson was represented by its mayor pro-tem, Cedric Hicks, a CSUDH alumnus who told the approximately 175 people that when he attended the university it was mostly a night commuter school, with very few people were there during the day. To see how it’s transformed, and with its sights set on the future, Hick said, has been gratifying.

Of course, Teddy the Toro stole the show because, well, that’s what Teddy the Toro does.
