Josaih Gibson and Ruby Robles of the Dominguez Hills Arts Collective recently discussed how campus art came to be on display in Japan.
Members of the DH Arts Collective sent artwork to Kobe, Hyogo, Japan in collaboration with Japanese artist Karou, a professor at Kobe Design University.
“Our goal was to create an environment where students can get together and make art and collaborate,” Robles said. “We want to show others what we are capable of, but most importantly be able to network with different artists.”
The theme of the art was “My Life,” in which students got to interpret how they see their lives at the moment through art.
The Dominguez Arts Collective, an on-campus art club, was founded by alumni Robert Huerrera, Josiah Gibson, Ruby Robles, Allison Garcia and Devon Tsuno.
The idea came to Huerrera to start an art-based club when he realized Dominguez had a ceramics club. The Dominguez Arts Collective wanted to focus on the importance of art.
The club has already held two exhibitions, which are open for anyone who wishes to exhibit his or her artwork. The exhibition has showcased artwork from UC Berkley, UCLA and Cal State Long Beach students as well.
“Our goal is to become bigger [and] build a website so the community can know who we are,” Gibson said. “What makes this club unique is we allow the campus community to exhibit their art as well.”
