With a 10-18 record last season and the departure of all but three players, one would expect insurmountable challenges for any coach.
But Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s basketball Coach Steve Becker sees opportunity.
This season, the Toros have 11 new players.
“We’re excited about the new energy and winning, competitive attitude these guys bring,” Becker said.
Leading scorer and all-conference senior point guard Vincent Golson looks for the Toros to improve from last year’s record. Golson averaged 15.3 points per game last season.
Golson will be the focal point on the offensive side. As the primary ball handler and decision-maker, he will be key when running the dribble drive offense.
The dribble drive is predicated on penetration into the lane and kicking the ball out to midrange and three-point shooters.
“He (Golson) led the league in assist/turnover ratio,” said Becker. “He’s been a huge part of our success and will be a big part of it this year, as well as senior center Justin Sadler and junior guard Jonathan Nichols.”
Sadler will look to dominate the post and the glass this season, with his team-leading 7.8 rebounds a game.
The Toros will lean on their size. With tall players, the Toros will run high pick and roll plays to open things up for the guards.
The men’s season tips-off with their participation in the PacWest Conference & California Collegiate Athletic Association Challenge tournament. CSUDH will travel to Riverside and face Holy Names University at 2 p.m. Nov 11.
