First impressions are always important when interviewing for a job. How a candidate is dressed is first thing hiring managers see when you walk in the room.
Here are some of my secrets on the best interview outfits for men and women.
Women, according to an article in Interior Talent it’s important to keep the colors you wear neutral and solid. So that means black, beige, or even white because you don’t want to distract the hiring managers with bright color clothing. Also, nothing with ruffles, see-through, or shiny because, again, we don’t want any distractions.
Some women struggle with the question of wearing pants or a skirt to an interview. Well my secret would be to wear long black dress pants. Pants are viewed as more professional and they are just easier to move around in.
Don’t wear leggings or yoga pants. They are not professional! It doesn’t make a good first impression.
Shoes are important for an interview as well, even though they will not be looked at as much. A basic black closed toe flat or small heel would be the perfect shoe.
Wearing flawless makeup is a huge trend right now, but for an interview keep it simple. Your makeup should have a natural look to it. A little foundation and mascara will be just fine.
If you have long hair it needs to be pulled back in a bun or even a ponytail. This keeps you from fidgeting with your hair while being interviewed.
Even though men don’t have as many additions as women you still need to make sure you’re professional.
Suits are the best option for an interview just don’t wear a black suit. An article from Gentlemen’s Gazette recommended wearing a solid navy, charcoal, or grey suit with two or three buttons; single or double breasted. Adding a tie to your suit is the best way to step up your interview game, because it elevates your look. Preferably you would wear a plain tie, nothing too flashy to cause a distraction.
Hair and facial hair should be nicely combed and trimmed. If you have a beard, make sure it is shaved and lined up.
Lastly, wearing dress shoes is most suitable for an interview. One mistake you don’t want to make is wearing tennis shoes because they are unprofessional. So solid black shoes, whether they are laced or just slip, would work perfectly.
Even though your attire should always be simple, don’t be afraid to put your own twist on it to be different.
