Jessica Duran and Jane Talbott, seniors at California State University, Dominguez Hills, are both majoring in Studio Art. On the first episode of the “Fluidity of Art” podcast, Duran and Talbott opened up about their art, what sparked their interest, w, and what experiences inspire the art they create.
The two also open up about the struggles they have faced as women artists, as well as the message they try to convey with their artwork. “Everybody is going to try to talk you out of your greatness, but you’ve got to talk yourself into your greatness,” Talbott said.
Duran and Talbott are both actively involved on campus, with Talbott as the Vice President of CSUDH’s Ceramics Guild, and Duran managing the Ceramics Guild’s Instagram page. The club meets on Wednesdays at 5:15 p.m. in the ceramics studio located in Lacorte Hall. Its sister club, the Arts Collective, follows immediately after at 5:30 p.m.
These clubs allow people on campus to stay connected with each other through art. Duran and Talbott want people everywhere to know that everyone can appreciate and create art, regardless of their major. “You don’t have to just be an art major to join the Arts Collective… I’m trying to encourage people to come on out” Talbott said.
Members of the Ceramics Guild can also come back after they have graduated and continue to use the facilities for free.
The Ceramics Guild will be holding a ceramics sale in late May, so students who are interested should keep an eye out for any updates on their Instagram page. “You can see some of the stuff your fellow students have made and put their hard work into, so we’re really looking forward to that,” Duran said about the ceramics sale.
